PMU Mares and Babies

One lesser-known controversial issue regarding horses is that of their use to develop hormone-infused drugs for human treatment. The drug most commonly referred to is the menopausal treatment known as Premarin, named after the lactating mares used to acquire these hormones. Estrogens are acquired from the urine of lactating mares. The controversy involves method of extraction, the care and treatment of the mares, and the babies born as a result. Organizations have stepped forward to both educate and rehabilitate.
